Short Docs

I have always believed in the deep power of storytelling. It has shaped the way I see the world, how I move through it, and what I feel in it. Because of that, I have dedicated my career to uplifting stories that would otherwise be pushed to the margins — voices that are often ignored or intentionally suppressed.

These are a few of my favorite projects I’ve had the opportunity to create through the years, working for global entertainment brands and non-profits. There are many more that I am proud of from the last 15+ years, but these continue to reflect the values that live deep in my heartspace and I'm proud to say much of my work in the last two election cycles have been to advance legislation and policy to empower people of color and working people throughout America.

Though I am no longer primarily focused on producing, I am always open to telling stories that strive to create a more compassionate and just world. Please contact me to discuss any potential projects by emailing me at kthai6@gmail.com. For my full professional history, go here.

PSA: Undocumented and Unafraid: Forbidden

Executive Producer, 2016, MTV

Undocumented and Unafraid: Forbidden was a PSA we shot as a companion piece for the documentary Forbidden, which profiles Moises Serrano who fell in love with a country that refused to recognize his full humanity — both as an undocumented immigrant and as a gay man. I wanted to expand beyond Moises story, and profile students who were at risk of getting deported after Trump decided to eliminate DACA. I feel honored that these students trusted us to tell their stories, risking their status and freedom. But we all did so to shed a light on their lives and to empower them to use their voice as an act of resistance.

A Day-in-the-Life of a Union Worker

Executive Producer, 2020-2022, SEIU

Walk-A-Day is a longstanding series that SEIU (Services Employees International United) has done for decades to bring awareness to the everyday challenges and struggles that essential workers face. We invited elected officials and political candidates to shadow essential workers so they can see what it truly feels like to walk a day in their shoes. We have had the honor of spotlighting nurse, homecare workers, childcare workers and janitors across the country while shooting with former President Biden, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Raising Minimum Wage in Florida

Executive Producer, 2020, SEIU

I’ve been able to see the power of storytelling firsthand through working on political campaigns that have shifted people and policy makers into action — from key national and state-level issues to the 2020 presidential election.

Our campaign to push for voters to Vote Yes for Amendment 2 in Florida was the only campaign that brought awareness to the need for minimum wage that year. Because of our campaign that ran across television and digital channels, we were able to pass Amendment 2 after 15 years of previous lobbying, which would raise the minimum wage to $15/hour from $8.65.

Universal Oral Health Care for All

Executive Producer, 2022, Families USA

Call me old school, but I wanted to be a journalist because I saw how storytelling could affect change and balance power. I saw this early on in my career during my first internship when I reported on a dangerous railway intersection. After three years of not responding to complaints and injuries, the company fixed the broken railroad track within a week.

Since that story almost 20 years ago, I knew that the power of storytelling could create change. This short doc was presented to Congress to tell the story of the need for national oral care and was met with a standing ovation and began the needed conversation in Congress of how oral health fit into the greater conversation around universal health care.

Profiling Trailblazing Immigrant Women in Congress

Co-Director and Executive Producer, 2023, SEIU

I love mixing forms together. It’s a joy of mine to see which medium and formats can best tell a story.

This series, Paving the Way, combined interviews of Congresswomen with original animation to highlight their struggles, triumphs and what being American means to them as immigrant, elected officials.

Mobilization: 2024 Union Conference (SEIU)

Executive Producer, 2024, SEIU

I love a good hype video. So when I was asked to create the opening video for a conference of 2 million union workers, I was up for the challenge.

Striking a balance of showcasing worker voices along with reminding them of their own power in the upcoming election cycle, this video created a buzzing energy in the room and had everyone up on their feet.

Rebooting Cribs for a New Generation

Developed by and Executive Producer, 2018, MTV

I spent many years of production career working in entertainment – from behind-the-scenes interviews with reality stars to original YouTube series about ASMR. But one of my proudest moments was bringing the classic MTV show Cribs back, but in a new form — for Snapchat.

We were proud to lead the way in reimagining storytelling through a vertical, mobile-first format — a first of its kind then. This was the most viewed series on Snapchat for a bit, racking up millions of views and making it the most viewed series on the series for months.

Episodes: Steve Aoiki, Von Miller, Nyjah Huston.
